Office Migration to Business in Kenya

Migrating to Office 365 For Business

Transitioning to the cloud is a major undertaking. This is due to the processes and planning involved When migrating users from an established infrastructure to a new platform.
As with any project, a good plan is essential to ensuring a seamless transition to Office 365.
Below is a step by step process.

Map Users and Devices

Taking into inventory types of devices in your infrastructure and, deciding which devices and therefore users will have access to Office 365. Devices such as PCs, Macs, Severs, Tablets, and Phones.

Identify Customizations

This involves identifying data that might not be suitable for migration. Ideally, it helps identify and clear up potential roadblocks.

Create a migration Schedule

Do a test migration with just a few users, then build a schedule for the complete migration.

Select a proper migration type

Do a test migration with just a few users, then build a schedule for the complete migration. This commonly includes: Hybrid, cutover, staged and the third party. More details to be discussed later in the post.

Get a grip on identity and configuration

Office 365 works with a variety of identity and authentication configurations for authentication of Office 365 accounts i.e. Azure AD connect (AAD Connect), Active Directory Federation Services

Migration methods to choose from during the transitioning include:

Hybrid Migration

Hybrid migration involves combining some on-premise resources with pure cloud resources to implement office 365. It's important to decide what to remain on-premises and which capabilities should move into the cloud.

Cutover Migration

This is more suitable for small businesses intending to migrate existing messaging data into office 365. During the migration, users' data is copied into office 365 and all pointed to office 365 at the same time. This method is also popular for users moving from a different hosted platform into office 365.

Staged Migration

A staged migration falls between a hybrid migration and a staged migration. In a staged migration, a limited co-existence between on-premises resources and the cloud is allowed but, not the full co-existence of a hybrid migration.

Third Party Migration

This refers to a packaged set of tools used by the service provider to migrate users to Office 365.

How to execute Migration to Office 365

In execution phase, stay informed by the service provider on the progress of the project. Check constantly with them to ensure that the budgeting and scheduling are in-line with the original plan. If they're not, sign off changes to the plan and ensure you explain the reasons for and nature of the changes as clearly as possible. Constant and clear communication is critical to the success of a migration.
